For our best wines we are using for many years already natural corks of best quality. These corks are manufactured by our supplier in Portugal cork stopper maker   J. Tavares, LDA .

All corks we are using are gently washed with a process called 'natural clean'. After washing our corks are covered with a very thin paraffin layer.

Presently we are using only corks with a length of 49 mm.

All corks are passing a TCA-control and we receive the TCA-test protocols from our supplier.

Why are we taking so much care of our corks?

Our best wines are worth being aged for several years - this will give them the typical mineral flavour that makes the wines of Rittersberg so specific. For storage periods of more than 5 years there is presently no other choice than natural cork. But only the best cork qualities give us and our customers a high level of security against the well-feared cork smell. However, we have to admit that there is no 100% guarantee with natural corks.

For our classical wines of Rittersberg:

For our classical wines of Rittersberg we are using today only the guaranteed TCA-free corks called DIAM from French maker oeneo - Bouchage.

In 2005 we made a unique test with about 1000 bottles using extruded plastic corks from the best maker Noma-Corc but we decided not to continue with this type of closure for our wines.

- easy opening of the bottles

- the supplier gives a guarantee of up to 5 years - this is definatly more than other suppliers of alternative corks offer - such as glass cork, screw or plastic cork.
